How to Properly Use Weather Stripping
Weather stripping is a simple yet highly effective way to improve your home’s energy efficiency, comfort, and protection against the elements. When applied correctly, it can prevent drafts, reduce energy bills, and even block out noise and dust. Here’s how to properly use weather stripping:
1. Understand Where to Use It
Weather stripping is typically used around movable building components, such as:
Doors (especially exterior doors)
Windows (both sash and casement types)
Garage doors
Attic hatches or access doors
The goal is to seal any gaps that allow air, moisture, or dust to pass through.
2. Choose the Right Type
There are several types of weather stripping, each suitable for different applications:
Foam Tape: Easy to install, ideal for irregular gaps on windows and doors.
V-Strips (Tension Seals): Great for sealing the sides of double-hung or sliding windows.
Door Sweeps: Mounted at the bottom of doors to block drafts.
Rubber or Vinyl Tubing: Durable and effective, often used around doors.
Metal Weather Stripping: Long-lasting and ideal for high-traffic areas.
Choose a material that fits the location, movement of the component, and the size of the gap.
3. Measure Accurately
Before installation, measure the length and width of the area to be sealed. Accurate measurements help ensure a tight fit and minimize waste.
4. Clean the Surface
Thoroughly clean the surface where the weather stripping will be applied. Dirt, dust, or old adhesive can weaken the bond and reduce effectiveness.
5. Apply with Care
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. For adhesive-backed types:
Peel off the backing gradually.
Press firmly as you apply to ensure full contact.
Avoid stretching the material, which can cause it to peel over time.
For nail- or screw-on types, use the recommended fasteners and ensure even spacing.
6. Test the Seal
After installation, check that doors and windows open and close smoothly. The seal should be tight enough to block air but not so tight that it hinders operation.
7. Maintain Regularly
Over time, weather stripping can wear out due to use or weather exposure. Check it seasonally, especially before winter or summer, and replace any damaged or compressed sections.
